Regarding the clergy stole, its origins are somewhat obscure, but it is believed to have derived from a handkerchief or a secular scarf used as a symbol of rank. In the 4th century, the stole, then called orarium or orarion, was worn as a vestment by deacons in the Eastern churches and was later adopted in the West. The Latin term stola came into use in the 9th century.

In the Eastern churches, the equivalent vestment is the epitrachelion worn by priests and the orarion worn by deacons.

In the Roman Catholic Church, the clergy stole is a symbol of immortality and is considered the unique badge of the ordained ministry, conferred at ordination. The stole symbolizes the bonds and fetters with which Jesus was bound during his Passion and is usually ornamented with a cross. Together with the cincture and the now mostly defunct maniple, the stole denotes the duty to spread the Word of God.

Stoles are often given by the congregation as a love gift at ordination or other life milestones. Generally, Protestant clergy wear the stole in the same manner as Catholic priests, around the back of the neck with the ends hanging down the front.
